Rio Ferdinand Details Family's Frightening Ordeal During Dubai Missile Strikes

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has provided a harrowing account of his family's experience in Dubai during recent missile and drone attacks launched by Iran. The 47-year-old football legend, who moved to the United Arab Emirates with his family in August 2025, described hearing "missiles, planes and fighter jets" and "big bombs" while trying to maintain calm for his children.

Family Forced to Shelter in Basement for Safety

Ferdinand revealed on his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents that his family was advised to take shelter in their basement when the attacks began. "We were down here sleeping with duvets and stuff," he explained, noting they have been "utilising the space wisely" as their home has been transformed into a makeshift bunker. The UK government has issued guidance for British nationals in the UAE to immediately shelter in place and avoid all travel.

The attacks have targeted Dubai International Airport and prominent landmarks including the Fairmont The Palm hotel on Palm Jumeirah and the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel. These strikes represent Iran's retaliation against Israel and the United States, with nearby countries Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Oman also facing threats.

Maintaining Normalcy Amid Chaos

Despite the terrifying circumstances, Ferdinand has attempted to maintain family routines, sharing a photo taken by his wife Kate in their gym with the caption: "Good morning. A very hectic but wholesome family workout this morning. Hope everyone is ok." The former footballer compared the situation to the COVID-19 pandemic, noting "the whole family is doing things we wouldn't usually be doing together," including home-schooling.

"It's frightening when you hear missiles, planes and fighter jets going above us, and you're hearing big bombs," Ferdinand confessed. "It's telling your kids what it is and helping them navigate through this moment, which is important especially as the dad of the house. You want to try and remain calm and keep everybody as calm as possible."

Family Composition and Security Concerns

Ferdinand lives in Dubai with his wife Kate, 34, their children Shae (5) and Cree (2), and his daughter Tia (14). While describing the situation as "scary," he paradoxically noted feeling "very secure and looked after" with his studio serving as their primary bunker. The family's experience mirrors concerns expressed by other British figures in the region, including England cricket star Jonny Bairstow, who has voiced worries about family safety in Dubai.

The conflict escalation has prompted numerous high-profile departures from the region, with reports indicating Cristiano Ronaldo's £61 million private jet leaving Saudi Arabia as tensions mounted. Ferdinand's candid account provides a rare glimpse into how celebrity families are navigating the dangerous geopolitical situation unfolding in the Middle East.
