Labour minister stutters on BBC as Naga Munchetty skewers him with one brutal question
Naga Munchetty skewers Labour minister with brutal question

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty shut down Business Secretary Peter Kyle during a tense exchange on the morning show. Kyle was left stuttering as he discussed the government's defence investment plan.

Resignations spark debate

Naga began by asking Kyle his thoughts on the resignations of John Healey as Defence Secretary and Al Carns as Armed Forces Minister the previous day, which occurred amid a dispute over the government's defence investment plan. Kyle admitted he was upset about the departures but insisted the government had been working hard on a plan to boost the British economy and defence. He concluded by saying, "When you see the plan, I think you'll see we put a lot of time and effort into getting it right."

A simple question

Naga then asked, "When did you see the plan?" A visibly flustered Kyle responded, "I've not seen all of the plan, but I am assured, and I am doing my bit as a department to make sure to benefit the British economy..."

Naga interjected, "Just on that point, so you haven't seen the plan, but you're sure that when I see the plan, I'll recognise that this government is getting it right. Do you know if John Healey and Al Carns saw the plan?"

Kyle laughed and replied, "Of course, they have been working very closely with the PM for a considerable amount of time."

Naga's follow-up

Naga pressed further, "So they've seen the plan, and yet they resigned... please let me finish my point. They saw the plan, they weren't happy, they've resigned. You haven't seen the plan, you're happy. Why do you think they resigned?"

Kyle insisted he had faith in the Prime Minister, but viewers rushed to social media to praise Naga for her savvy takedown as the minister stumbled over his words.

Viewer reactions

One viewer said, "Naga isn't in the mood for messing around this morning," while another agreed, "Naga is consistent in calling out BS irrespective of which party mouthpiece is on." A third joked, "Naga is on one today…" and a fourth raged, "The stupid @peterkyle needs to go back to 'Business School of Lying' AND learn how to tell fibs and talk gobbledegook."

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
