Indonesian authorities have apprehended a Scottish man described as a senior leader within an international criminal syndicate shortly after he landed on the popular resort island of Bali. The arrest was executed based on an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of Spanish law enforcement agencies.

The 45-year-old suspect, identified as Steven Lyons, was taken into custody by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Saturday following his arrival from Singapore. Untung Widiyatmoko, the head of Indonesia's branch of Interpol, confirmed that the immigration system had flagged Lyons as the subject of the Red Notice.
A Red Notice is an international alert issued by Interpol at the request of a member country, calling for police worldwide to arrest a suspect for the purpose of extradition. Lyons is wanted in both Spain and the United Kingdom in connection with serious organized crime, drug trafficking, and extensive money laundering operations.
Extradition and International Investigation
Widiyatmoko announced that Lyons will be extradited to Spain on Wednesday. He has been on Spain's wanted list for approximately two years, linked to a murder case that occurred there in 2024. The arrest in Bali was part of a coordinated joint investigation involving Spanish and Scottish police forces.
According to Widiyatmoko, Lyons is alleged to have led a sophisticated crime ring that utilized shell companies to facilitate money laundering across Europe and the Middle East. The network operated in multiple jurisdictions, including Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.

In a related development, police in Scotland and Spain conducted raids last week in connection with Lyons' case, resulting in multiple arrests. These operations were supported by Europol, the European Union's law enforcement cooperation agency, as well as authorities in Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.

Background and Previous Incidents
Scottish media reports indicate that Lyons survived a shooting in Glasgow back in 2006, an incident that tragically resulted in the death of his cousin. Following this event, he relocated to Spain before eventually settling in Dubai within the United Arab Emirates.
In a further violent episode last May, Lyons' brother and an associate were shot and killed in a suspected gangland shooting at a beachfront bar located in Fuengirola, southern Spain. These incidents paint a picture of a long-standing involvement in criminal activities marked by violence.
Companions and Ongoing Investigations
Lyons arrived in Bali accompanied by two companions, who are believed to still be on the island, according to Bugie Kurniawan of Bali's immigration office. Spain's Interpol has identified these individuals as members of the same criminal cartel; however, they are not currently subject to any arrest warrants.
