In a shocking development, a Kansas mother who initially reported that her 15-month-old son fatally choked on a meatball has now been charged with his murder. This case has also prompted authorities to reopen an investigation into the death of her two-year-old daughter, who died under strikingly similar circumstances just one year earlier.
Charges Filed Following Autopsy Findings
Shanna Kay Whitton was formally charged on April 13 in connection with the 2025 death of her son, Matthew Jon Whitton, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. The charges stem from a thorough investigation that contradicted the mother's original account of the toddler choking to death.
As detailed by ABC affiliate KAKE, emergency responders were dispatched to the Mimosa Arms Apartments in Clearwater on August 25, 2025, following reports of an unconscious child. Despite receiving immediate lifesaving measures at the scene and further intensive medical care at a Wichita hospital, the young boy tragically passed away three days later.
Autopsy Reveals Homicide
An autopsy conducted by the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Center later determined the actual cause of death to be complications resulting from an "intentionally inflicted asphyxia event." This critical finding led the medical examiner to officially rule the case a homicide, directly challenging Whitton's initial narrative.
From the outset, both neighbors and law enforcement officials expressed skepticism regarding the mother's story. Heather Lambert, a neighbor, told KAKE that Whitton's account of the food involved was inconsistent and changed over time.
"First, she told people it was a meatball from spaghetti with sauce," Lambert recounted, "then she said it was SpaghettiOs with sauce in it."
Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter echoed these doubts in an interview with KSN, confirming that investigators did not believe the choking explanation provided by the mother.
Arson Incident and Previous Charges
The investigation also revisited a suspicious fire that occurred at the family's residence on July 26, 2025. Investigators determined that the blaze had originated in the child's bedroom while he was inside and concluded that it had been deliberately set, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.
Whitton was originally arrested in October 2025 on arson-related charges connected to this incident and has remained in custody on a substantial $500,000 bond since that time.
Amended Charges and Ongoing Probe
Following the presentation of new forensic findings by detectives earlier this month, the case was significantly amended to include charges of first-degree murder, child abuse, and aggravated child endangerment. Sheriff Easter emphasized the gravity of such cases in an official statement.
"These investigations take time because we have a responsibility to get them right," Easter stated. "Our detectives are committed to putting the pieces together and being a voice for children who can't speak for themselves."
The investigation remains active and is now examining previous incidents involving Whitton, according to police authorities. A statement from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office confirmed, "The Sheriff's Office can confirm additional incidents involving Shanna Kay Whitton, Matthew Jon Whitton and another deceased child are part of this ongoing investigation. All incidents remain part of an active investigation."
Daughter's Death Under Scrutiny
According to a newly released autopsy report, Whitton's two-year-old daughter, Gypsy Rose Whitton-Marley, died in July 2024 in an incident that was initially ruled an accidental choking, as reported by KWCH. The report indicated that Gypsy Rose was eating grapes while Whitton was in the restroom and was found unresponsive upon her return.
Although the 2024 death was officially classified as an accident at the time, the autopsy report noted that several individuals had raised serious concerns regarding potential "medical child abuse," formerly known as Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy. Records further revealed multiple previous emergency calls involving Gypsy Rose, including a particularly alarming incident where she was found unresponsive near a plastic bag just one day before the fatal choking event.
Whitton is scheduled to appear in court on May 7 to face these serious charges as the investigation continues to unfold and seek justice for the young victims.
