In a deeply distressing courtroom scene, jurors and observers were confronted with the harrowing final moments of seven-year-old Athena Strand, captured on dashcam footage from the FedEx delivery van of her killer. The video, played during the trial of Tanner Horner, reveals the child's terrified questioning as she was abducted from her home in Paradise, Texas, in November 2022.
The Abduction and Heartbreaking Exchange
Tanner Horner, a 34-year-old FedEx driver, snatched Athena Strand while delivering a package of Barbie toys that her parents had purchased for Christmas. The footage shows Horner arriving at the girl's home, walking to drop off packages, with Athena following behind him. He then opened his delivery van while she stood nearby, before picking her up and placing her inside.
Once in the van, Athena can be heard asking Horner a chilling question: "Are you a kidnapper?" The terrified girl repeated this inquiry several times throughout the video, as detailed in court proceedings. She also spoke to the driver about her school and teacher, with the footage capturing her growing fear when Horner stopped driving.
Courtroom Reactions and Judicial Warnings
The video was so distressing that Judge George Gallagher warned people in the courtroom to leave if they could not bear to watch it. "If you think you cannot watch it or listen to it, leave now. Now's your time to get out," he stated. Athena's parents, Maitlyn Gandy and Jacob Strand, both stepped out of the courtroom before the dashcam footage was played, unable to endure the traumatic evidence.
Jurors reportedly broke down in tears as the video unfolded, highlighting the emotional weight of the case. The full footage showed the moment of abduction, with Horner covering the dash camera after a point, leaving only audio to capture the subsequent events.
Horner's Actions and Admissions
After Athena asked if he was a kidnapper, Horner told her to sit down and threatened to hurt her if she screamed. When she asked where he was going, he ordered her to sit again. At one point, Horner said to Athena: "You're really pretty. You know that?" As he stopped the van, the girl asked: "Is this your house?" to which he replied: "No, I don't live around here."
Horner then asked the child to remove her shirt, but she refused and asked for her mum. The court heard Athena crying and screaming in the audio, painting a grim picture of her final moments. Horner later admitted to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping hours before his trial was set to begin, with the court now deciding whether he will face the death penalty or life in prison.
Contradictory Statements and Evidence
An arrest warrant revealed that Horner initially told police he accidentally hit Athena with his van during a delivery and panicked, claiming he put her in the back of the vehicle before strangling her. However, the dashcam footage and other evidence contradict this account, showing a premeditated abduction.
Earlier in the trial, a disturbing photo was shown of Athena kneeling behind Horner as he drove before her death, further underscoring the brutality of the crime. The case has drawn significant attention due to its shocking nature and the involvement of a trusted delivery driver in a residential setting.
