A harrowing incident has shaken the backpacking community after a German tourist was kidnapped and sexually assaulted while camping in a remote area near Perth, Western Australia.
The 25-year-old victim, whose identity remains protected, was reportedly camping alone in Wilga, approximately 200km east of Perth, when the terrifying ordeal unfolded.
Violent Abduction in the Wilderness
According to police reports, the attacker approached the woman's campsite in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The assailant, described as a tall Caucasian male with a muscular build, allegedly forced the backpacker into his vehicle at knifepoint before driving her to an unknown location where the sexual assault occurred.
Miraculous Escape and Police Response
In what authorities are calling a 'miracle', the victim managed to escape her captor after several hours and raise the alarm at a nearby property. Western Australia Police have launched a major investigation, with detectives from the Sex Assault Squad taking charge of the case.
"This was a brazen and violent attack on a vulnerable tourist enjoying our beautiful countryside," said Detective Inspector Mark Thompson at a press conference. "We're throwing all available resources at finding this dangerous individual."
Backpacker Community on High Alert
The attack has sent shockwaves through Australia's backpacker community, with many travellers reconsidering solo camping trips. Local hostels have reported an influx of concerned international visitors seeking safer accommodation options.
Tourism Western Australia has issued new safety guidelines for remote travellers, recommending:
- Avoiding isolated camping spots

- Registering with local authorities when travelling in remote areas
Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect or who noticed suspicious activity in the Wilga area to come forward immediately.
