Washington Father Fatally Shot After Intervening in Teen Harassment Incident
A tragic shooting in Spokane, Washington, has left a family devastated after a father of four was killed while attempting to protect a young woman from harassment. Dylan Bundy-Gray, 44, was shot dead on March 22 after confronting two teenagers who were allegedly chasing and whistling at a high school girl.
Teen Charged with Murder in Connection to Shooting
Onyx Deligt, 16, has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the fatal incident. According to police reports and court documents, the altercation began around 7 a.m. on East Wellesley Avenue in North Spokane when a woman walking in the area reported being harassed by two teenage boys.
Bundy-Gray, who was having morning coffee on his front porch, witnessed the harassment and shouted at the teenagers to stop. This prompted the teens to approach his home, leading to a physical struggle in the street. During the confrontation, police allege that Deligt fired a handgun six times, striking Bundy-Gray.
Family Describes Victim as Hero in Court Statements
During a court hearing on Thursday, Bundy-Gray's family members emotionally described him as a hero. His wife, now a widow and sole parent to their four school-aged sons, expressed the family's profound shock and grief.
"I am now a widow and the sole parent of our four boys, all still in school," she told the court. "We continue to be shocked that Dylan was shot and killed on an otherwise normal Sunday morning. We are devastated, and these words do not do justice to our pain and grief."
Bundy-Gray's brother, Ian, took to social media to share details about his brother's final moments, describing him as an amateur boxer who stepped in to protect the young woman.
"He was having a morning coffee on his porch in Spokane Washington when he saw a couple of young men chasing and harassing a high school girl," Ian Bundy-Gray posted. "He stepped in and began fighting to save her. My brother was an amateur boxer, but the best hands are no match for a coward with a gun."
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The Spokane Police Department utilized surveillance footage to track the suspect following the shooting. According to local news outlet KREM 2, the video captured Deligt fleeing the scene while two women encouraged him to "run, hurry up, they're coming!" as police sirens approached.
The second teenager involved in the altercation was also shot in the hand during the incident and received treatment at a local hospital. Due to the severity of the allegations, Deligt is being charged as an adult.
Spokane County Commissioner Jerry Scharosch presided over the hearing and set the teen's bond at $1 million. Deligt is scheduled to appear back in court at 9 a.m. on March 31 for an arraignment proceeding.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner has officially identified the victim as Dylan Bundy-Gray, confirming the tragic outcome of what began as an attempt to protect a stranger from harassment.
