Former NFL Linebacker Darron Lee Denied Bond in Girlfriend's Murder Case
A judge in Tennessee has ordered former New York Jets first-round draft pick Darron Lee to remain in jail without bond as he faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpétuo. The ruling was delivered by Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tori Smith on Wednesday, following Lee's arrest late last week.
Graphic Details Emerge in Court Testimony
During the bond hearing, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Lockhart provided disturbing testimony about the crime scene and autopsy findings. According to Lockhart, who was present during the autopsy, the potential manner of death has been classified as blunt force trauma homicide, though a full autopsy report has not yet been released.
The affidavit reveals that first responders were called to a home in the Chattanooga suburb of Ooltewah on February 5 for a CPR in progress call, where they found Perpétuo already deceased. Lee reportedly told deputies that his girlfriend may have fallen in the shower, but investigators found extensive amounts of blood in different areas of the residence that contradicted this explanation.
Evidence Points to Violent Assault
Authorities executing a search warrant discovered multiple kinds of trauma to Perpétuo's body, including:
- A stab wound to her abdomen
- An apparent human bite mark on her shoulder
- A large bruise on her head
- Black eyes with heavy swelling
- Dried blood on her face and neck
Lockhart testified that she also suffered a severe brain injury and a broken neck. Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp noted additional stab wounds on Perpétuo's legs while she was wearing pants without cut marks, suggesting the pants were put on after the assault.
Crime Scene Evidence and Lee's Injuries
Investigators found alcohol, narcotics, and a gun at the residence. The affidavit also detailed that Lee had a facial injury, lacerations on his hands, wounds on his chest, and blood inside the case of his cellphone.
Crime scene detectives identified blood that had been attempted to be cleaned in multiple areas of the house, with cleaning supplies found near locations where testing confirmed blood stains despite no visible blood remaining.
Prosecution Seeks Maximum Penalty
District Attorney Wamp argued forcefully for the judge to withhold bond, stating in court: "Mr. Lee was in a home with a female that was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death. And the explanation that he gave doesn't make any sense whatsoever."
Wamp revealed that Lee was on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one county and battery in another, and on probation in Ohio for attempted batteries. The case is eligible for capital punishment, though prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.
Defense Arguments and Legal Proceedings
Lee was represented at the hearing by deputy public defender Mike Little, who argued that bond is often set for homicide or first-degree murder defendants, including those with prior felonies. When contacted for comment by The Associated Press, Little stated it was too early in the case for him to be making any statements.
Lee also faces a charge of tampering with or fabricating evidence. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 9.
Football Career and Background
The 31-year-old Lee played 58 games in the NFL with the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills from 2016 through the 2020 seasons. The former Ohio State linebacker was the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Jets and was the defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl.
The couple had been living in the rented home where the incident occurred for approximately 10 days prior to the alleged crime, according to testimony presented during the hearing.
