EasyJet Warning for Spain and France Holidaymakers Over New Border Checks
EasyJet Warning for Spain, France Holidaymakers Over Border Checks

EasyJet has issued an important update for holidaymakers heading to Spain, France, and other popular European destinations. The airline, which released the alert on April 1, warns that over 100 airports may experience longer queue times due to the introduction of the European Entry/Exit System (EES).

What Is the EES?

The EES is a new automated border control system that will require travellers from non-EU countries, including the UK, to provide biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints upon entry and exit from the Schengen Area. EasyJet stated: "Airports across Europe may experience longer waiting times at passport control due to the new European Entry/Exit System (EES). This could mean you need to have your biometrics taken at border checks, including the scanning of facial images and fingerprints."

Affected Countries

The EES applies to 29 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. However, the Greek embassy in London confirmed that British travellers will be temporarily exempt from biometric registration upon arrival in Greece.

Travel Advice

EasyJet advises passengers to download the airline's app for live updates, including gate opening times. The airline also urges travellers to ensure they have all necessary travel documents and to allow extra time for both outbound and return journeys. "Please also allow extra time to make your way through the airport on your return trip," the airline said. Additionally, the EU is developing a mobile app to facilitate pre-registration for EES; passengers are encouraged to check if this app is available for their destination country before downloading.

The update comes as the travel industry braces for the full implementation of the EES, which aims to enhance border security and streamline entry procedures in the long term. For now, holidaymakers are advised to plan ahead and expect potential delays.
