Violent Car Park Rage Attack Leaves Couple and Children Traumatised
A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for a shocking "car park rage" assault on a couple in front of their young children. Kurt Kirkham, of Walkerville, Newcastle, launched an unprovoked attack after driving the wrong way on a one-way system, leaving both parents injured and their daughters, aged three and nine, terrified.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The incident occurred on Saturday, March 15, when the family was driving to collect a pet. They were in the car park opposite Dunelm in North Shields when Kirkham's silver Mercedes approached them driving the wrong direction on a one-way section of road. The male victim stopped his car, and Kirkham aggressively approached, initially appearing to walk away after being told children were in the vehicle.
However, Kirkham suddenly turned back, yelled "come on then," and punched the man through the open window. Alarmingly, he then opened the back door where the two young girls were sitting, prompting their father to exit the vehicle to draw attention away from his daughters.
Brutal Physical Assault
Kirkham proceeded to throw the father to the ground and "kicked him with full force to the chest," resulting in a fractured sternum. When the mother attempted to intervene, Kirkham grabbed her, threw her violently to the ground, and ripped a substantial chunk of hair from her scalp. All of this occurred while both children cried hysterically, witnessing their parents being assaulted.
In a victim impact statement, the mother described the profound trauma: "The incident has had a massive impact on me, my partner and the two girls. The man was unhinged and I've never seen anything like it. In my opinion he was out for blood and was not going to stop until he seriously hurt someone."
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
At Newcastle Crown Court, Kirkham pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court heard he had previous convictions for violence and had received three suspended sentences in the past. Judge Stephen Earl sentenced him to 29 months in prison, describing the offense as "one of the worst types of offences of this nature one can encounter."
The judge noted that Kirkham claimed confusion about the road system and felt threatened by the couple's reaction to his driving error, which may have involved a remark or gesture. However, Judge Earl emphasized: "You caused, yet again, significant harm, this time to two parents in front of their children. The children saw their parents assaulted by someone who was clearly out of control."
Lasting Psychological Impact
The mother's statement detailed the ongoing mental scars: "Mentally this has scarred me. It's been a really traumatic event in our lives. Children should not be exposed to violence like that." She expressed particular fear when Kirkham opened the door where her daughter was sitting, concerned he might drag the child from the vehicle.
When arrested, Kirkham admitted driving the wrong way but described the violent confrontation as merely "unfortunate," showing little remorse for the physical and psychological damage inflicted on the entire family.
