Father and Girlfriend Receive Lengthy Prison Terms for Fatal Abuse of Seven-Year-Old Boy
A father and his girlfriend have been sentenced to three decades behind bars each after pleading guilty to the horrific neglect and abuse that led to the death of a seven-year-old boy just days before Christmas. Kevin Gavarrete, aged 27, and Julia Sizemore, aged 22, were arrested following the tragic discovery of Kayden Gavarrete unresponsive in a bathroom at their Indianapolis home on December 22, 2024.
Emergency services pronounced the young boy dead at the scene after responding to a call placed around 3:40 pm. Paramedics and detectives immediately observed disturbing signs of extensive physical trauma on Kayden's body, including multiple bruises, scabs, lacerations, and what appeared to be small burn marks across his skin.
Evidence of Severe Malnutrition and Brutal Injuries
The Marion County Coroner's Office reported that Kayden weighed a mere 32 pounds at the time of his death, indicating severe malnutrition for a child of his age. Medical examiners noted the presence of rigor mortis solely in his jaw and head, alongside bruises covering his legs, stomach, and feet. Further examination revealed numerous scratches and cuts scattered over his body.
According to official reports, the cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force trauma injuries combined with complications arising from acute malnutrition. This grim conclusion underscored the prolonged suffering endured by the young victim before his untimely passing.
Father's Disturbing Claims and Legal Proceedings
During police interviews, Kevin Gavarrete offered a series of implausible explanations for his son's condition. He claimed that Kayden appeared malnourished because he refused to eat after being ill and insisted that the boy's injuries were self-inflicted, resulting from violent tantrums where he allegedly hurled himself to the floor.
Gavarrete also stated that he had been awake most of the previous night playing video games before falling asleep in the afternoon. He recounted knocking on Kayden's door around 2:30 pm, receiving no response, stepping outside to smoke a cigarette, and then discovering his son unresponsive upon returning.
Julia Sizemore, described as Gavarrete's on-and-off girlfriend, told authorities she had never witnessed the father striking his son. Despite these assertions, both defendants accepted a plea agreement, admitting guilt to multiple counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect by placing a dependent in an endangering situation.
Prosecutor's Emotional Response and Sentencing
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed profound distress over the case, describing it as among the worst he has encountered in his two-decade career. "As a father of a child who was the same age as Kayden, it's gut-wrenching," Mears stated. "This resolution ensures both defendants will spend decades in prison and provides certainty for Kayden's family."
The sentencing of 30 years imprisonment for each defendant brings a measure of justice for the horrific abuse that culminated in Kayden's death just before the holiday season, leaving a community in mourning and highlighting severe failures in child protection.
