British Expat Warns of UAE Dangers After Jail Ordeal

British Millionaire's Dream Life in UAE Turns Into Four-Year Nightmare in Dubai Prisons

Albert Douglas, a 63-year-old British millionaire who once dined with Dubai's elite, has issued a grave warning to anyone contemplating a move to the United Arab Emirates. His caution comes after enduring four years of imprisonment in the expat hotspot, where he alleges he was subjected to torture and severe mistreatment.

From Rolls Royce to Prison Cell: A Dramatic Fall from Grace

Douglas relocated to Dubai in the 1990s, capitalising on the property boom and the rapid transformation of the desert landscape. He built a highly successful business, Alomi Real Wood Floors, which supplied prestigious projects including the Burj Khalifa and City Walk. At the peak of his prosperity, he drove a Rolls Royce, resided in a £6 million mansion on Palm Jumeirah, and attended glamorous events with figures such as ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who reportedly gifted him a pet tiger cub.

This luxurious existence shattered in 2019. After returning to Dubai from the UK, Douglas was arrested at Dubai International Airport. Authorities fined him £2.5 million and sentenced him to three years in prison, allegedly due to an inability to reach his son, Wolfgang, over financial issues related to government projects. Douglas insists he had no operational links to his son's business at the time, beyond being listed on a company document from 2007.

Allegations of Torture and Inhumane Conditions

Douglas's ordeal escalated after a failed Supreme Court appeal and an attempted escape to Oman in February 2021, which led to his recapture. He claims he was attacked by guards, an incident his family believes triggered Alzheimer's disease and multiple strokes. During his incarceration across several Dubai jails, he alleges he was tortured, deprived of water, food, and essential medical treatment.

"God didn't give me these injuries," Douglas revealed, detailing lasting physical and mental scars. "I suffer now from blackouts. I had my broken shoulder, which wasn't properly fixed. I had three fingers that were broken. I have a back injury." His weight plummeted from 12st 8lbs to 9st 6lbs, and he witnessed fellow inmates being raped and dying by suicide.

A Stark Warning to Prospective Expats

Originally sentenced to two years in February 2021, later reduced to 18 months, Douglas remained imprisoned until May 2025, following intervention by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Now free, he urges extreme caution for Brits considering relocation to the UAE.

"Be careful and be aware of what happened to me - it could very, very easily happen to you," he warned. "I assure you, I'm not the only one. There are dozens, even hundreds of people that are in the same situation. It's endemic in their system: not a one-off, it's accepted."

Douglas further cautioned that human rights are virtually non-existent in the UAE, stating: "Speaking your mind in any way detrimental to the government of the UAE can get you put in jail, and when you are in jail, you are under scrutiny all the time." His story serves as a sobering reminder of the potential risks behind the glittering facade of expat life in the desert nation.
