Zelensky Warns Middle East War Undermines Ukraine Peace Efforts
Zelensky: Middle East War Hurts Ukraine Peace Efforts

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced a 'very bad feeling' about the ongoing war in the Middle East, warning that it is negatively impacting efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. In an interview with the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, Zelensky highlighted how the focus on Iran is shifting attention away from his country's struggle against Russian aggression.

Diverted Attention and Diplomatic Delays

Zelensky pointed out that the United States is now concentrating more on the Middle East than on Ukraine, leading to constant postponements of diplomatic meetings. He attributed this solely to the war in Iran, stating it is the primary reason for these delays. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that this shift in focus could weaken international support for Ukraine at a critical time.

Strain on the UK-US 'Special Relationship'

The president also addressed the recent strain in the 'Special Relationship' between the United Kingdom and the United States amid the Iran conflict. He referenced comments by US President Donald Trump, who criticized the UK for not acting faster in allowing American use of British bases to strike Iranian missile sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has previously attacked UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's leadership, comparing him unfavorably to Winston Churchill.

Zelensky, however, downplayed the tension, suggesting that the historical bond between the two nations is 'stronger than the emotions of two or three people.' He expressed confidence that Starmer and Trump could meet to 'reload' the relationship, describing Starmer as a 'smart and very good partner.'

Putin's Strategic Advantage

In his analysis, Zelensky warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin views a prolonged war in the Middle East as beneficial. He explained that such a conflict would lead to the depletion of US reserves and air defence manufacturers, ultimately weakening Ukraine by reducing available resources. Zelensky stated, 'For Putin, a long war in Iran is a plus. It means the depletion of US reserves and the depletion of air defence manufacturers, so we have a depletion of resources.'

He further elaborated that Putin aims to weaken Ukraine through a long process, with the Middle East serving as one of the methods to achieve this goal. This perspective underscores the interconnected nature of global conflicts and their potential to influence regional stability.

Call for Renewed Focus

Zelensky's remarks come amid ongoing Russian drone strikes on Ukrainian cities, such as the attack on a residential area in Odesa in March 2026. His comments serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustained international attention on Ukraine. By highlighting the risks of diverted focus, Zelensky aims to rally support and ensure that efforts to end the war in Ukraine are not overshadowed by other global crises.
