Violent clashes erupted outside the Iranian Embassy in London on Friday evening, leaving four police officers with minor injuries and resulting in 14 arrests.
Missiles Thrown and Flag Removed in Unrest
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that missiles were thrown at officers during the protest in the upscale South Kensington district. The situation escalated when one individual managed to climb onto the embassy roof, remove a flag, and come down. This person was subsequently detained on suspicion of multiple offences.
Police Response and Casualties
Officers responded to the scene of significant disorder at approximately 8.45pm. The London Ambulance Service was called and four people were taken to hospital for treatment following the altercations. The fourteen individuals arrested face allegations including violent disorder, trespass, and assaulting police. The protester who accessed the roof was specifically arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, trespass on diplomatic property, and assault.
Context of the London Demonstration
The demonstration in the UK capital mirrors weeks of sustained protests within Iran itself. Those protests have been fuelled by a severe economic crisis, soaring inflation, and widespread anti-government sentiment. Many demonstrators, both in Iran and abroad, have voiced calls for the overthrow of the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Friday's events in London represent a significant and violent spillover of these tensions onto diplomatic ground in the heart of London.
The Metropolitan Police have maintained a presence at the embassy following the incident as their investigation continues.
