Farlam Hall: Bucolic Cumbrian Retreat With Michelin Dining

Farlam Hall, a country house hotel in north-east Cumbria near Hadrian’s Wall and less than 20 miles from the Scottish border, offers a bucolic retreat surrounded by rolling hills, sheep and mature gardens. Despite its rural feel, it is just 10 minutes from the M6 and 12 miles from Carlisle railway station, which has direct trains to London and Scotland.

The property dates back to 1428 and features elegant interiors with vases of lilies, framed photographs of former residents, contemporary art, and a 19th-century clock by Robert Stephenson. Large sash windows overlook gardens, a lake, and a 150-year-old cedar tree. Staff are professional and knowledgeable about the area.

Accommodation includes 12 bedrooms in the main building and six luxury Stable Suites, decorated in dove grey, creams and whites. Deluxe Rooms and Junior Suites have bathtubs, and all rooms feature local art, garden views, Molton Brown products, bathrobes, slippers, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee facilities. Stable Suites have private outdoor seating, some with kitchens and clawfoot bathtubs.

The Cedar Tree restaurant, led by chef and patron Hrikshikesh Desai, holds a Michelin star and offers tasting menus and a three-course lunch. Dishes use kitchen garden ingredients with Indian spice influences. Bistro Enkel provides a more informal option from Sunday to Tuesday. The kitchen accommodates major allergens but cannot adapt for restrictions like onions or garlic.

The Sycamore Retreat spa offers massages and facials using GAIA skincare, and guests can borrow yoga mats. Three lounges, two with open fires, provide relaxation spaces. Activities nearby include walking, cycling, stargazing, golf and fishing.
