US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that talks between the United States and Iran have laid a 'very good foundation for a successful final deal' to end the war. Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force Two to return to Washington, Vance compared the negotiations to building a house.
Vance on the negotiations
'The final deal is the house,' Vance said. 'We set the foundation. We haven't built the house, but we've laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people.' The vice president's comments came after a second round of talks in Rome between US and Iranian officials, which both sides described as constructive.
Potential asset unfreezing
Vance also suggested that the United States could agree to unfreeze Iranian assets to allow the purchase of American agricultural products, including soy, corn and wheat. This would mark a significant shift in US policy, as Iranian assets have been frozen under US sanctions. The proposal could provide a humanitarian channel while broader negotiations continue.
The talks, mediated by Oman, are part of efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal or reach a new agreement. Iran has demanded the lifting of sanctions as a precondition for any deal, while the US insists on strict verification measures. Vance's remarks signal cautious optimism from the Trump administration, though he stressed that a final agreement has not yet been reached.
