Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in producing advanced, battle-tested drone interceptors, and is now deploying its expertise to assist five Middle Eastern and Gulf nations in defending against Iranian drone assaults. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed this strategic move on Friday, revealing that the United States and European countries have also sought similar support, underscoring Kyiv's pivotal role in modern drone defence systems.
Expanding International Cooperation
In a statement on X, Mr Zelensky detailed: "Our teams are already working with five countries on countering Iran's 'Shahed' drones—we have provided expert assessments and are helping build a comprehensive defence system." This initiative stems from Ukraine's extensive experience in developing cost-effective and efficient drone interceptors, which have been crucial in repelling Russia's full-scale invasion over the past four years.
Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, led a delegation to the region this week, announcing that Ukrainian military specialists are actively operating in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. These experts are focused on protecting civilian and critical infrastructure, with plans to expand these protective measures further.
Strategic Implications and Requests
Zelensky disclosed in audio messages via WhatsApp that 228 Ukrainian experts are currently deployed across the region. Additionally, the United States has requested expert support for its military personnel in two specific areas, while European partners with forces stationed locally are also reviewing similar appeals from Kyiv.
Ukraine proposed a deal to the US approximately a year ago, involving interceptor drones, naval drones, and long-range drones. However, the cooperation between Washington and Kyiv on drone matters remains ambiguous. Last week, Zelensky noted that Ukraine was awaiting White House approval for a drone production agreement, but former President Donald Trump subsequently dismissed the offer, stating on Fox News Radio that the US does not require assistance with drone defence.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Iran, a key ally in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, signed a broad cooperation pact with Moscow last year, intensifying regional tensions. Meanwhile, Ukraine is exploring a potential role in restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing conflicts involving Iran.
Kyiv faces concerns over dwindling supplies of sophisticated missiles needed to counter Russian strikes, as the war in Iran depletes global stockpiles. Zelensky has expressed a desire to exchange drone expertise with Arab Gulf countries, which are frequently targeted by Iranian Shahed drones, in return for advanced air defence missiles vital for Ukraine's own defence efforts.
Diplomatic Efforts and Challenges
Zelensky sent an official delegation to the United States late Thursday to revive suspended US-brokered trilateral talks aimed at ending Russia's invasion. These negotiations have stalled while international attention shifts to the Iran conflict, with no breakthroughs on key issues yet. The White House has not confirmed any meetings with the Ukrainian delegation.
A senior Kremlin official indicated on Friday that a new round of US-mediated talks between Moscow and Kyiv is likely to occur soon, describing the current pause as temporary. Western European officials have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of delaying negotiations to leverage his military advantage, with Russian forces currently occupying nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
Economic and Military Pressures
The Middle East conflict that began on February 28 with Israeli and US strikes on Iran has diverted global focus from Ukraine's plight. Concurrently, Russia benefits from a temporary US waiver on oil sanctions, providing a financial windfall, while Ukraine struggles with cash shortages and awaits a promised 90-billion-euro loan from the European Union.
Putin is anticipated to launch new offensives as weather conditions in Ukraine improve, increasing pressure on Kyiv. Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian counterattacks have disrupted a planned Russian offensive expected in early spring, highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region.
Ukraine continues to assess long-term security cooperation with the five nations, aiming to bolster defences against drone threats and enhance international stability amidst escalating global conflicts.
