Tragic Drowning Claims Life of American Student in Barcelona

The spring break holiday of a young American student ended in tragedy this week when his body was discovered in the waters off Barcelona. James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Alabama, was visiting friends studying abroad in the Spanish city when he disappeared from a beachfront nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Heartbreaking Discovery and Tribute

Police divers located Gracey's body in approximately twelve feet of water along a breakwater near the Shôko nightclub at around 6pm on Thursday. Authorities have ruled the death an accidental drowning. The devastating news prompted an emotional tribute from his girlfriend, Kenna Cohen, who had been dating Gracey for the final six months of his life.

'Forever in debt for having been lucky enough to be loved by the most pure-hearted, sweet, devoted, and selfless soul,' wrote Cohen, a 21-year-old University of Georgia junior. 'I so badly wish I could rewind time, but I am so grateful I was able to witness the last six months of your incredible life.'

Cohen, who grew up in Atlanta and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in human development, shared a framed photograph of the couple on her Instagram with a desperate plea for help before his body was found. The photo featured the Bible verse from 1 Corinthians about love: 'It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.'

Final Hours and Investigation

Gracey had been separated from his friends at approximately 3am on Wednesday after visiting the Shôko nightclub during what was described as a boys' trip to visit members of their Theta Chi fraternity who were studying abroad. Initial fears suggested foul play, but Catalan regional police confirmed on Friday that security footage showed Gracey leaving the nightclub alone and walking across Somorrostro Beach toward rocks before falling into the water.

Investigators from Mossos d'Esquadra recovered footage from security cameras near the establishment that clearly showed Gracey's movements. The video evidence dispelled rumors that he had left with an unidentified stranger who might have witnessed the incident. Police stated the footage allowed them to conclude he fell accidentally and was not pushed.

A preliminary autopsy report recorded an initial finding of accidental death, with a full autopsy scheduled to follow at a later date, though this typically confirms the initial report. Police boats, divers, helicopters, and drones searched the area but found no further clues beyond the security footage and witness accounts.

A Relationship That Transcended Rivalries

Cohen and Gracey first appeared together publicly at her Phi Mu sorority graduation ball in November, just before her 21st birthday. Despite attending rival universities—Cohen at Georgia and Gracey at Alabama—the couple put aside school rivalries to attend the SEC Championship college football game on December 6 with Cohen's friends. Her team emerged victorious with a 28-7 rout over Gracey's Alabama.

Later that month, they posed together in front of a Christmas tree during holiday break. Cohen did not join Gracey on his Barcelona trip as it was specifically organized as a boys' excursion to visit fraternity brothers studying overseas.

In her tribute, Cohen asked for continued prayers for the Gracey family, who traveled to Barcelona following the tragedy. 'Please continue to pray for the Gracey family and keep Jimmy’s memory close to your hearts,' she wrote. 'Fly high, my angel.'

Gracey, originally from the Elmhurst suburb of Chicago, Illinois, was remembered as a hockey star and beloved friend whose sudden death has left a community in mourning. Police have made all necessary arrangements with his relatives, who remain in Barcelona as investigations continue.
