In a significant development from Ukraine, the national head of the Patrol Police division, Yevhen Zhukov, has resigned following a disturbing incident in Kyiv where officers were seen fleeing a shooting scene. This resignation comes after a video circulated on social media showing patrol officers running away from gunfire, leaving civilians unprotected during a violent attack.
Kyiv Shooting Tragedy and Police Response
According to Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, the shooting resulted in the deaths of six individuals, with eight others, including a 12-year-old child, remaining hospitalised due to injuries. The incident has sparked outrage and led to immediate consequences within the police force.
In his resignation statement, Zhukov condemned the actions of the officers involved, stating, "The police officers acted unprofessionally and disgracefully. As police officers, they should have been helping and rescuing our citizens. But they failed to assess the situation properly and left civilians in danger." He added, "As a combat officer, I have decided to submit my resignation from the position I currently hold."
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko earlier described the officers' behaviour as "a disgrace to the entire system," and an investigation has been launched to address the matter, with decisions expected regarding their superiors.
Ukraine's Robotic Warfare Expansion
Amidst this domestic crisis, Ukraine's defence ministry has announced ambitious plans to procure 25,000 ground robotic systems for deployment to the frontline in the first half of this year. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasised the strategic goal, stating, "Our goal — 100 per cent of frontline logistics should be performed by robotic systems."
This initiative follows President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent announcement that Ukraine's army robots successfully recaptured land from surrendering Russian forces in a historic battlefield first. The expansion aims to save lives and enhance military efficiency, with Fedorov noting that Ukraine will double the total procured robotic systems throughout 2025.
Recent Military and Diplomatic Updates
In other war-related news, Ukraine has continued its drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, including a "massive" strike on the Black Sea port of Tuapse, which resulted in one death and injuries, and targeted oil refineries in regions like Samara. These attacks persist despite temporary waivers on Russian oil sanctions by the Trump administration, a move criticised by Kyiv officials.
Diplomatically, Hungary's incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, has initiated early talks with EU officials to unblock funds frozen under his predecessor, Viktor Orban, which could pave the way for critical loans to Ukraine. Additionally, President Zelensky is advocating for a European anti-ballistic missile defence system, citing the need to counter Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
On a global scale, Pope Leo has called for "weapons to fall silent" in Ukraine, urging dialogue amidst the intensifying conflict, while commending a ceasefire in Lebanon as a "reason for hope."
Ukrainian military reports indicate that Russia has suffered over 1.3 million troop losses since the invasion began, with significant equipment damages, highlighting the ongoing toll of the war.
