Ukraine Dismisses Russian Nuclear Allegations as 'Absurd'
Ukraine has firmly rejected what it describes as "absurd" Russian allegations that Kyiv is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons with assistance from Britain and France. This statement comes as the world marks the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirming the nation's commitment to defending its independence.
Escalating Attacks and Security Incidents
In a recent escalation, Russian forces conducted overnight attacks on Ukraine, deploying an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 133 drones. Ukrainian air defences successfully neutralised 111 of these drones, showcasing ongoing military tensions. Concurrently, in central Moscow, an explosive device was detonated next to a police vehicle, resulting in the death of the attacker and one officer, with two other officers injured, highlighting security challenges beyond the battlefield.
International Support and Policy Changes
The UK government has announced a significant extension to the visa renewal period for Ukrainian refugees, increasing it from 28 to 90 days. This policy change coincides with the war anniversary, aiming to provide more stability for displaced individuals. Additionally, EU leaders have reaffirmed their financial commitment to Ukraine, including a 90 billion euro loan and a new 920 million euro winter energy package for 2026-2027, underscoring sustained international backing.
Global Reflections on the Conflict
As the conflict enters its fifth year, global leaders and organisations are reflecting on the impact of the war, with increased focus on humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine's sovereignty and reconstruction.
