UK Travel Warning After US-Israel Strikes on Iran

UK Foreign Office Issues Critical Travel Advisory Amid Middle East Escalation

The UK Foreign Office has issued a major dual warning, urging British citizens to take cover and avoid all travel to the Middle East. This urgent advisory follows a coordinated military operation by Israel and the United States targeting several cities in Iran on 28 February 2026.

Immediate Travel Restrictions and Safety Precautions

Foreign Office officials have updated travel advice to explicitly warn against all travel to Israel, Palestine, and other nations across the region. The official website states: "Due to the threat posed by escalation in the region, we recommend against all travel to Israel and Palestine. On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel commenced joint military action in Iran, Israeli airspace has now closed."

Britons currently in the Middle East are strongly advised to take "sensible precautions" as Iran has retaliated with missile attacks in the Gulf. In specific guidance for Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Kuwait, officials have instructed people to "immediately shelter in place." The advice further clarifies: "Remain indoors in a secure location, avoid all travel and follow instructions from the local authorities."

Regional Retaliation and Security Threats

Iran launched military strikes against Bahrain's capital, Manama, in direct response to the US-Israel operation. Subsequent attacks have targeted Israel, Qatar, and other locations, with explosions reported in the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Israeli officials confirmed that Iran fired missiles toward the country following the initial strikes.

Iran's security council has vowed a "crushing" response, accusing the "enemy" of wrongly assuming Iran would "surrender to their petty demands through such cowardly actions." This rhetoric underscores the heightened risk of a wider regional conflict.

Government Stance and Diplomatic Efforts

The UK Government has emphasized that its priority is "the safety of UK nationals" in the Middle East. A Government spokesperson stated: “Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and that is why we have continually supported efforts to reach a negotiated solution.”

The spokesperson added: “As part of our longstanding commitments to the security of our allies in the Middle East, we have a range of defensive capabilities in the region, which we have recently bolstered. We stand ready to protect our interests. We do not want to see further escalation into a wider regional conflict.”

Widespread Flight Disruptions and Airline Responses

In the wake of the escalating conflict, several airlines have suspended flights to and from destinations in the Middle East "with immediate effect." Major carriers including WizzAir, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic have cancelled services to the region.

  • Virgin Atlantic cancelled its VS400 service from Heathrow to Dubai, scheduled to depart at 10.10pm, describing it as a "precautionary measure." A spokesperson confirmed: “The safety and security of our customers and people is always our top priority and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
  • WizzAir director Rachel Wray announced the suspension of all flights to Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman until at least 7 March. She explained: “Wizz Air confirms that, following the recent escalation of the security situation in Iran, the airline is suspending all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman with immediate effect.”
  • Qatar Airways suspended flights from and to Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace, further highlighting the operational challenges posed by the conflict.

The situation remains fluid, with the UK Foreign Office continuing to monitor developments and update its guidance as necessary to ensure the protection of British citizens abroad.
