Kennedy Center Honors to Proceed Under New Name Despite Venue Closure
The annual Kennedy Center Honors awards will continue this year, even as President Donald Trump announced the prestigious arts venue will close in July for a two-year renovation. However, the event will now be known as the "Trump Kennedy Center Honors" following a controversial decision by the venue's board to add Trump's name to the cultural memorial dedicated to President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963.
Venue Closure and Relocation Plans
Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell, a Trump appointee, confirmed to WTOP that the awards will definitely go forward, though they may be held at a different venue due to the closure. "It will probably just be in a smaller venue, which just means ticket demand will be even higher," Grenell said. The Kennedy Center is set to remain open until July 4, then close until 2028 for renovations that Trump estimated would cost around $200 million, citing the building's poor condition.
Artist Cancellations and Political Backlash
The closure announcement came after a series of artists cancelled their shows at the venue, many in reaction to the board of trustees' vote to add Trump's name to the building. Trump had previously fired the previous board and installed a new panel. Grenell accused Democrats of orchestrating a coordinated campaign to tank ticket sales, claiming they urged artists to cancel and attacked the center non-stop. "This is so sad & unnecessary – @TheDemocrats have been calling artists urging them to cancel and attacking the Center non-stop. It’s a calculated campaign," Grenell said.
Notable cancellations include composer Phillip Glass and soprano vocalist Renee Fleming, with the prestigious San Francisco Ballet also pulling out of a scheduled five-day performance in May. Grenell responded by stating that "professional artists should perform for everyone — not just for people they agree with politically."
Allegations of Vandalism and Division
Grenell further escalated the conflict by accusing the Democratic party of vandalizing the ice rink outside the venue, though he provided no evidence to support this claim. "And now they have mentally unstable people taking action – and vandalizing the Center," he said on social media. "We’ve seen serious death threats and constant harassment. Commonsense Democrats must speak up before this violence takes a life."
Kennedy Center Spokesperson Roma Daravi echoed this sentiment, telling Rolling Stone, "We have no place for politics in the arts, and those calling for boycotts based on politics are making the wrong decision. We have not cancelled a single show. Leftist activists are pushing artists to cancel but the public wants artists to perform and create—not cancel under pressure from political insiders that benefit from creating division."
Awards Details and Recent History
The date for this year's awards has not yet been determined, with Grenell noting that organizers are already looking for alternative venues. The most recent Kennedy Center Honors took place in December, with Trump hosting the event and selecting award recipients, including Sylvester Stallone, KISS, Gloria Gaynor, George Strait, and Michael Crawford.
Despite the venue's insistence on its apolitical stance, performers continue to cancel shows ahead of the planned closure, highlighting the deep political divisions surrounding the arts institution.
