US President Donald Trump has labelled the hostility between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as 'ridiculous', as he pushes for a peace deal to end the ongoing war. Speaking to reporters, Trump said he is actively engaged in resolving the 'Russia situation' and maintains 'good conversations' with both leaders, despite the deep-seated animosity between them.
Trump's Peace Efforts
Trump emphasised that 'hate is a bad thing' when trying to settle disputes, expressing confidence that a resolution will eventually be reached. 'I have good conversations with President Putin and President Zelensky, and I think we can get something done,' he stated. The US president's remarks come amid heightened tensions, with Zelensky accusing Putin of 'nuclear terrorism' following Russian military activity near the Chernobyl nuclear plant.
Zelensky's Accusations
Zelensky warned that Russian forces operating close to Chernobyl could trigger a repeat of Europe's worst nuclear disaster, calling the moves 'disrespectful' and dangerous. He also criticised Trump's envoys for visiting Putin in Moscow while bypassing Kyiv, describing it as a slight to Ukraine's sovereignty. The Ukrainian leader urged the international community to pressure Russia to withdraw from the area, citing the catastrophic potential of any incident at the decommissioned plant.
Trump's comments and Zelensky's accusations underscore the fragile state of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, now in its third year. While Trump remains optimistic about brokering a deal, the mutual distrust between the two leaders presents a significant obstacle to any potential peace agreement.
