Trump Delivers 10-Day Ultimatum to Iran Over Nuclear Programme
Former US President Donald Trump has issued a stark 10-day ultimatum to Iran, demanding that the country agree to curb its nuclear programme or face what he described as "bad things," including the possibility of military action. Trump made these provocative remarks during a recent Board of Peace meeting, where he also highlighted his involvement in brokering a peace deal for Gaza.
Escalating Tensions and Military Build-Up
Despite ongoing diplomatic discussions between US and Iranian officials, which Trump characterised as "good talks," no significant progress has been made towards resolving the nuclear standoff. In response to the stalemate, the United States has initiated a substantial military build-up in the Middle East. This mobilisation includes the deployment of additional warplanes and the positioning of two aircraft carrier groups in the region, signalling a heightened state of readiness.
Trump specifically suggested that potential attacks on Iran could be launched from strategic locations such as Diego Garcia or RAF Fairford. This statement has raised immediate concerns about potential British involvement in any military escalation, given the use of UK-based facilities.
Iran's Defiant Response and Regional Drills
In a swift and forceful reaction to Trump's ultimatum, Iran's Supreme Leader issued a warning of severe retaliation against any aggressive actions. Concurrently, Iran conducted extensive naval drills, which included the simulated closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz and joint military exercises with Russia. These manoeuvres are seen as a clear demonstration of Iran's military capabilities and its readiness to defend its interests in the face of external threats.
The combination of Trump's ultimatum, the US military build-up, and Iran's defiant response has created a volatile situation in the Middle East, with the potential for rapid escalation if diplomatic efforts fail to yield a breakthrough within the specified timeframe.
