Tom Felton, the actor who famously portrayed Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series, has reached out to the young performer taking on the iconic role in HBO's forthcoming television adaptation. The 38-year-old star revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he sent a personal message to 14-year-old Lox Pratt, who will embody the Slytherin antagonist in the new show.
Felton's Supportive Gesture
During the podcast episode released on Thursday, Felton explained his decision to contact Pratt directly. He emphasised that while he felt it was really important to make contact, he deliberately avoided offering specific acting advice. The last thing I'm going to do is offer anything other than say, 'Here's my phone number. Here's my address,' Felton stated. To his parents, as well as him, and to anyone else there: I can't offer you advice. This is your journey.
Encouragement Without Interference
Felton's message focused on encouragement rather than guidance. He urged Pratt to have as much fun as possible during the production and to take as many pictures as you can. In a lighthearted remark, he even suggested steal as many props as you can. They'll be worth a fortune. However, he made it clear that he remains available for support, adding if you do need a word of encouragement or questions to ask, I'm there.
Background and Context
Tom Felton began his journey as Draco Malfoy at age 13 when filming started on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He currently portrays an older version of the character on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a sequel set nineteen years after the original series. The new HBO adaptation will devote each season to one of J.K. Rowling's books, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Fans received their first glimpse of Lox Pratt in character last week when the series trailer was released, showing the young actor in Slytherin robes. The show is scheduled for a Christmas premiere, generating significant anticipation among the global Harry Potter community.
Other Original Cast Members Following Suit
Felton is not alone among the original film cast in reaching out to their successors in this controversial reboot. Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular Harry Potter, revealed in November that he sent a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, the actor portraying Potter in the new series. I sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back, Radcliffe said on Good Morning America. I do not want to be a specter in the lives of these children at all.
Similarly, Rupert Grint, the original Ron Weasley, confirmed he contacted Alastair Stout, who will play Potter's best friend in the adaptation. Grint told the BBC in November that his message was really just wishing him all the best with it. I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience.
This collective outreach from the original stars demonstrates a supportive passing of the torch to the new generation of actors embarking on the magical journey that defined their own careers.
