Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has ignited a fierce controversy by drawing a direct parallel between the current situation in Minneapolis, where children are reportedly hiding from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, and the harrowing experience of Anne Frank during the Holocaust. The governor's remarks have provoked widespread condemnation from prominent Jewish organisations and activists, who argue that such comparisons trivialise the unique horrors of the Holocaust.
Holocaust Museum Issues Strong Condemnation
The U.S. Holocaust Museum responded swiftly and forcefully to Governor Walz's comments, releasing a statement that unequivocally denounced the analogy. The museum emphasised that exploiting Anne Frank's tragic story for contemporary political purposes is not only unacceptable but also deeply offensive, particularly in the context of rising antisemitism globally. The institution stressed the importance of preserving the historical specificity of the Holocaust, where millions, including Anne Frank, were systematically persecuted and murdered based on their race and religion.
Jewish Leaders Voice Their Disapproval
Ambassador Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun, who serves as former President Donald Trump's antisemitism envoy, joined the chorus of criticism against Governor Walz. Rabbi Kaploun highlighted the fundamental differences between the Holocaust and issues surrounding illegal immigration, noting that Anne Frank faced persecution solely because of her Jewish identity, a circumstance he argued is not analogous to immigration enforcement actions. Similarly, Jewish-American activist Shabbos Kestenbaum echoed these sentiments, cautioning against drawing such comparisons which he believes risk diminishing the memory of Holocaust victims.

Governor Walz made his inflammatory comparison just two days before International Holocaust Memorial Day, a timing that has further intensified the backlash. The governor's comments followed the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti during a protest in Minnesota against increased ICE activity in the region.
