Ruth Langsford's Strictly Panic Attack Nightmare Revealed

Ruth Langsford Details Harrowing Strictly Come Dancing Panic Attack

Ruth Langsford has candidly shared the distressing details of a nightmare experience on Strictly Come Dancing that culminated in a full-blown panic attack broadcast live on television. The Loose Women star, who competed in the BBC dance competition in 2017, described the ordeal as profoundly nerve-wracking, revealing it left her feeling utterly detached from reality.

The Onset of Overwhelming Stage Fright

During the inaugural live show, Langsford developed an intense case of stage fright that rapidly escalated. Her professional partner, Anton Du Beke, who later became a judge on the series, was compelled to escort her to the studio canteen in an attempt to calm her nerves. In an extract from her new memoir obtained by MailOnline, Langsford explained, "As time passed, my nerves got worse and worse, and I had a deep sense of dread in the pit of my stomach."

She recounted the moment she descended the stairs to perform a waltz to "This Was Nearly Mine" from South Pacific, stating, "My brain seemed to detach from my body." Despite her extensive experience with live television, the sheer scale of the studio audience proved overwhelming. "I live and breathe live television so that wasn't a problem, but I had never performed in front of a big audience before and I swear I could see the whites of their eyes," she added.

Physical Symptoms and Fear of Fainting

The physical manifestations of her anxiety were severe and debilitating. Langsford described being unable to move, feeling dizzy, and experiencing extreme dry mouth. "I had no saliva in my mouth, so my smile was more of a grimace with my lips stuck to my teeth. My heart was beating so loudly I could hear it in my ears, and I was convinced the audience would be able to hear it, too," she revealed.

At the peak of the crisis, she believed she was on the verge of collapsing on live television. "I am going to faint. Right here, on Strictly. A live show. Nobody has ever done that before. Maybe they'll cut the cameras or focus on the judges?" she thought. Unbeknownst to her, her then-husband Eamonn Holmes, who was in the audience, sensed her distress. "Unbeknownst to me, at that moment Eamonn turned to Jack and said: 'I think she's in trouble.' He could tell from my wide-eyed stare," Langsford noted.

Retrospective Realisation and Aftermath

Reflecting on the dance, Langsford characterised it as "an out-of-body experience" and recalled Du Beke essentially carrying her around "like a rag doll." It was only much later that she identified the episode as a panic attack, something she had never encountered before. "What I realised in hindsight was that I had suffered a panic attack, not something I'd ever experienced before," she admitted.

Despite the traumatic start, Langsford persevered, scoring 16 out of 40 points for that initial waltz and advancing to week eight of the series. The 2017 season was ultimately won by Holby City actor Joe McFadden. Anton Du Beke transitioned to a full-time judging role on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, replacing Bruno Tonioli.

Broader Context of Nerves on Strictly

Langsford's experience is not isolated within the high-pressure environment of Strictly Come Dancing. In 2025, reality television star Vicky Pattinson publicly acknowledged nearly declining her participation due to overwhelming anxiety. She told her followers, "I knew before Strictly even started I was going to struggle with my nerves and anxiety... so much so, that I almost said no to this incredible opportunity. I almost let my fear stop me from doing something amazing."

Pattinson, who finished in eighth place, emphasised her determination not to let fear dictate her life. The series that year was won by Lioness footballer Karen Carney, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of contestants who grapple with the intense scrutiny and performance demands of the show.
