Russia has ordered a British diplomat to leave the country within two weeks, levelling accusations of espionage in a move that further escalates diplomatic tensions between London and Moscow.
Formal Expulsion and Protest
The Russian foreign ministry stated it had received information concerning the diplomat's alleged links to the British secret intelligence services. British charge d’affaires Danae Dholakia was summoned to the ministry to be formally notified of the expulsion and to receive what Moscow described as a "strong protest".
Moscow's Stern Warning to London
In a sharply worded statement, Russian officials declared they would not tolerate what they called "undeclared British intelligence officers" operating on their soil. They issued a clear warning, stating that Moscow would "respond decisively in kind" if the UK government chose to escalate the situation further.
A Pattern of Tit-for-Tat Diplomacy
This incident represents the latest chapter in a series of reciprocal diplomatic expulsions between the two nations. This pattern has become markedly more frequent since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with both capitals repeatedly ejecting each other's officials over various allegations.
The expulsion was formally announced on Thursday 15 January 2026, with the diplomat given a fortnight to depart Russian territory. The development underscores the profoundly strained state of bilateral relations, which remain at a post-Cold War low.
