Massive Attack Frontman Robert Del Naja Detained During Central London Protest

Robert Del Naja, the renowned frontman of the trip hop band Massive Attack, has been arrested in London on suspicion of showing support for a proscribed organisation. The arrest occurred during a mass demonstration against the ban on Palestine Action in Trafalgar Square on Saturday afternoon.

Dramatic Arrest Scene Captured on Camera

Del Naja, also known by his stage name 3D, was sitting among hundreds of fellow demonstrators when police officers approached him. He was holding a sign that clearly stated "I Oppose Genocide, I Support Palestine Action." Officers informed him he was being placed under arrest before physically carrying him away from the protest site as other attendees cheered and applauded in support.

Footage obtained by the Press Association shows a woman shouting "You are amazing!" and another exclaiming "We love you!" as Del Naja lay on his back. Three officers then lifted him by his legs and armpits. As he was being removed, a man can be heard asking Del Naja why he was being arrested, to which the musician reportedly replied, "I'm being unlawfully arrested."

Del Naja's Defiant Stance Prior to Arrest

Speaking to the Press Association before his detention, Del Naja expressed his determination to attend the protest despite potential repercussions for his music career. "Being a musician, obviously, there was a lot of trepidation around how we might not be able to travel and get visas," he admitted. "But I thought 'this is ridiculous' and then the police making that U-turn to arrest people again, I thought that is even more ridiculous. So I'm going to hold a sign today."

He added confidently, "If I get arrested, I feel very confident that if I stand up in court with the right guidance and say 'this was an unlawful arrest and, therefore, I don't accept it'." Del Naja further justified his participation by stating, "I think that the actions of Palestine Action were highly patriotic because they were pretty much protecting our country from getting involved in serious war crimes, and breaking international law. How much more patriotic can you be than that?"

Widespread Police Action at Trafalgar Square

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers have arrested a total of 212 people at the Trafalgar Square demonstration, all on suspicion of showing support for a proscribed organisation. Those detained range in age from 27 to 82 years old. Approximately 100 police officers were present at the base of the square, approaching the protest in coordinated lines before making arrests.

Protesters had congregated in the square, sitting on camping chairs and the ground while holding placards with messages such as "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action." Large banners near the National Gallery displayed slogans including "Jurors deserve to hear the whole truth" and "Israel starves kids."

Background on Massive Attack and Upcoming Tour

Massive Attack, the English trip hop band formed in Bristol in 1988 by Robert Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles, currently consists only of Del Naja and Marshall as of 2025. The band is scheduled to begin a summer tour across Europe from May 26 until June 8, with performances in Helsinki, Finland; Rattvik, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; Berlin, Germany; and Brussels, Belgium.

This arrest highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding protest rights and legal definitions of support for proscribed organisations in the United Kingdom. The incident has drawn significant attention due to Del Naja's high-profile status in the music industry and his vocal political activism.
