Rebecca Gayheart has publicly shared her heartfelt emotions following the tragic death of her husband, actor Eric Dane, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 53. The news comes less than a year after Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
A Heartfelt Tribute and Community Support
In a moving tribute posted on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, Gayheart expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support from their community. "I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community," she wrote. "There aren't words to express our gratitude. You are truly holding us up during this difficult time."
This follows her earlier Instagram post on Saturday, where she shared nostalgic throwback pictures of Dane with their two children, Billie and Georgia. The family had set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to support their teenage daughters, which had raised an impressive $295,000 by Sunday afternoon, surpassing more than half of its $500,000 goal.
A Courageous Battle and Family Statement
In an official statement, Dane's family announced his passing with heavy hearts, noting that he died on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," the statement read.
A Complex Yet Enduring Relationship
Dane and Gayheart first met in 2003 and married less than a year later. Their marriage lasted over a decade before they separated in 2017. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2025 but dismissed the filing after Dane's ALS diagnosis became public. Despite their estrangement, the couple maintained a close friendship and effective co-parenting relationship for years, with Gayheart providing care for Dane until his death.
In a December 2025 essay for The Cut, Gayheart reflected on their unique bond, writing that their "love may not be romantic, but it's a familial love." Both had dated other people during their separation, yet their connection remained strong and supportive.
Final Words of Praise and Affection
In his final pre-recorded interview for Netflix's Famous Last Words, which aired on February 20, Dane spoke glowingly about Gayheart, describing her as his "best friend" and "biggest champion." He explained, "We're still really best friends, but we're not together. By virtue of the distance of us living in separate homes, there's a lot of time lost there. But I made sure that I can be there as much as possible and certainly when it counts."
Dane continued with emotional clarity, "Well we still love each other deeply, I just don't think we want to live with each other. But there's a lot of love there. I will never, by the time anybody sees this, would have ever fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with Rebecca."
The Grey's Anatomy star's death has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and the entertainment community, highlighting both his professional legacy and the profound personal relationships he maintained throughout his life.
