Kanye West, the controversial rapper legally known as Ye, has announced a new upcoming performance in India, scheduled for May 2026, following a series of high-profile cancellations of his European tour dates. This development comes after significant backlash and official interventions led to the scrapping of his shows in the UK, Switzerland, and Poland.
New Delhi Performance Announced
Taking to Instagram, Ye posted a message revealing his latest gig: "Ye live in India. New Delhi, 23 May 2026, 8pm Only performance in India. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium." This announcement marks a shift in his tour plans, redirecting his performance to a new international venue after multiple European cancellations.
Wireless Festival and UK Backlash
West was originally set to headline the Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park, North London, during the summer of 2026. However, the decision sparked outrage, with Labour leader Keir Starmer describing it as "deeply concerning." The Prime Minister also weighed in, stating: "Anti-Semitism in any form is abhorrent and must be confronted firmly wherever it appears. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure Britain is a place where Jewish people feel safe."
Subsequently, the Home Office blocked West from entering the UK, leading to the cancellation of the Wireless Festival performances. This move highlighted the political and social tensions surrounding the artist's planned appearances.
European Cancellations Expand
The cancellations extended beyond the UK. In Switzerland, FC Basel, which manages events at St Jakob-Park stadium, announced after a review that they would not proceed with West's show. In a statement, bosses said: "FCB received an enquiry and considered it. However, after thorough review, we have decided not to proceed with the project, as we cannot, in accordance with our values, provide a platform for the artist in question within this context."
In Poland, a scheduled performance at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów on June 19, which would have been his first in the country in 15 years, was also cancelled. Adam Strzyzewski, venue director, confirmed: "The concert by Ye (Kanye West), scheduled for 19 June 2026 at the Superauto.pl Silesian Stadium, will not take place due to formal and legal reasons."
Polish Government Opposition
Poland's culture ministry took a strong stance against West, with Marta Cienkowska stating that the musician's "promotion of nazism" was in "manifest contradiction with Poland's values." She criticized West as an artist who "openly declares he loves Hitler" and "promotes Nazi ideology and makes money by selling T-shirts emblazoned with the swastika." Cienkowska emphasized: "In a country marked by the history of the Holocaust, we cannot pretend that this is just entertainment." The ministry admitted they were considering a ban on his performances in Poland.
French Resistance and Postponement
In France, West made the decision to postpone his show in Marseille after facing significant resistance. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had pledged to explore "all possibilities" to prevent the performance, while Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan opposed the rapper's visit to the multicultural city, citing its history of immigration. This pressure contributed to the postponement, though it was not an outright cancellation like in other countries.
The series of cancellations and the new announcement in India underscore the ongoing controversies surrounding Kanye West's public appearances and statements, reflecting broader societal debates over free speech, artistic expression, and the boundaries of acceptable discourse in entertainment.
