Pete Hegseth, the US Secretary of Defense, has drawn sharp criticism for his brash and bellicose public commentary on the ongoing conflict with Iran. Critics describe him as a 'very dangerous person' who is out of his depth guiding the US military through a murky new Middle East war.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has been the face of Donald Trump's military campaign in Iran. He boasted to reporters at the Pentagon about 'death and destruction from the sky all day long,' adding that the US is 'punching them while they’re down.' His rhetoric has been amplified by a social media video mixing Hollywood clips with real kill-shot footage from the attacks.
Janessa Goldbeck of Vet Voice Foundation called Hegseth a 'white Christian nationalist' with the full arsenal of the US government at his disposal. She warned that he has a 'permission slip from President Trump to deploy carnage wherever he wishes.' Hegseth's confirmation as defense secretary was narrowly approved in a 50–50 Senate vote, with Vice-President JD Vance casting the deciding ballot.
Hegseth's past includes service in the US Army National Guard, deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and a tenure at Concerned Veterans for America marred by allegations of financial mismanagement and sexual misconduct. His mother once emailed him, accusing him of being 'an abuser of women.' He has also written about the possibility of civil war if Democrats win an election.
As defense secretary, Hegseth has vowed to 'unleash overwhelming and punishing violence' and dispense with 'stupid rules of engagement' that restrict attacks on civilians. His approach has been described as a departure from traditional solemnity, instead adopting the performative antics of a partisan broadcaster.
