Thousands of demonstrators across Denmark and Greenland have taken to the streets in a powerful rebuke of former US President Donald Trump's renewed ambition to acquire the vast Arctic territory of Greenland.
Parody Hats and Defiant Chants
The protests, held on Sunday 18 January 2026, saw large crowds gather in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and Greenland's own capital, Nuuk. In a pointed act of political satire, many protesters wore red hats parodying Trump's iconic campaign merchandise, emblazoned with the slogan 'Make America Go Away' (MAGA).
Their chants of 'Greenland is not for sale' echoed a firm rejection of the proposal. The sentiment was mirrored officially, with Greenland's parliament unanimously favouring remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump's Tariff Retaliation and Military Moves
In a swift and characteristically combative response, Donald Trump announced the imposition of 10 per cent import tariffs on eight European countries that have voiced opposition to his plans for Greenland. This economic retaliation has significantly escalated the diplomatic row.
The situation has also taken a strategic military turn. At Denmark's request, several European nations have deployed military personnel to Greenland, underscoring the seriousness with which they view Trump's territorial ambitions and the need to bolster the island's defence.
Widespread Opposition to Military Action
Public opinion within the United States appears to be a significant barrier to any aggressive move. US public sentiment is reported to be largely opposed to the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This domestic pressure, combined with international resistance, complicates any potential path forward for the proposal.
Greenland, an autonomous country that manages its own internal affairs, finds itself at the centre of an unexpected geopolitical 'circus', as some protesters labelled it. The strong show of unity from its people, its government in Nuuk, and its allies in Copenhagen and across Europe presents a formidable challenge to Trump's vision.
