Foreign Office Issues Critical Safety Warning for British Tourists in Cyprus
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent safety alert for British tourists currently in Cyprus, advising them to take immediate precautions due to escalating regional tensions. This warning comes in the wake of a drone strike on RAF Akrotiri, a key British military base on the island, which has heightened security concerns and disrupted travel.
Escalating Regional Tensions Prompt Safety Measures
On Monday, RAF Akrotiri was targeted by a drone attack, threatening the safety of British military personnel stationed there. In response, approximately 60 flights to and from Cypriot airports were cancelled, causing significant travel disruption. The FCDO has emphasised that regional escalation poses substantial security risks, directly impacting tourists in the Mediterranean nation.
To bolster defence capabilities, the UK is deploying HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navy's six Type 45 air defence destroyers, from Portsmouth. Crewed by over 200 personnel, HMS Dragon is equipped with a Sea Viper anti-air missile system and is designed for advanced air defence operations. Defence Secretary John Healey stated, "We are moving quickly to further reinforce our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean." He added that the vessel brings world-class air defence capability, complemented by Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles to counter drone threats.
