Eric Allan, Veteran Actor of Emmerdale and The Archers, Passes Away at 85
Eric Allan, a prolific character actor renowned for his portrayals of rural figures in British television and radio, has died at the age of 85. He was best known for his long-running role as Bert Fry in the BBC Radio 4 series The Archers, a part he inhabited for 24 years, and for appearing as blacksmith Frank Blakey in the early episodes of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm, later retitled Emmerdale.
Early Career and Breakthrough in Bleak Moments
Allan's career took a significant turn when he starred in Mike Leigh's debut feature film, Bleak Moments, released in 1971. In the film, he played Peter, a socially awkward teacher drawn to Sylvia, an office worker caring for her learning-disabled sister. Allan later reflected that this role allowed him to tap into his own adolescence, stating in a 1982 interview that all his characters were versions of himself at different life junctures. He and Leigh collaborated on numerous theatre productions over the years, solidifying a creative partnership.
Emmerdale Farm: The First Wedding and Controversial Exit
Allan joined the cast of Emmerdale Farm in December 1972, merely two months after the soap's launch on ITV. As Frank Blakey, he rented the village forge and, in 1973, married Janie Harker, portrayed by Diane Grayson, in the serial's inaugural wedding ceremony, with Jack Sugden serving as best man. However, Frank's opposition to hunting made him unpopular with some locals, leading to a storyline where he faced eviction, highlighted by a fictional newspaper headline decrying his victimisation. In 1974, Frank departed for Essex with Janie after accepting a teaching position, marking the end of Allan's television stint in the show.
The Archers: Bert Fry's Enduring Legacy
More than two decades later, in 1997, Allan assumed the role of Bert Fry in The Archers, following the death of previous actor Roger Hume. Bert worked at Brookfield Farm under Phil Archer and later his son David, embodying old-fashioned country values through activities like ploughing contests and poetry recitals. Allan noted that Bert often provided light relief in the serial, though fans rarely recognised him due to his altered vocal delivery. Bert's wife, Freda, remained a silent character until her death in a 2015 flood, which inspired a heartfelt poem from Bert. Allan retired from acting in 2021, with Bert passing away peacefully in the Bull pub after a game of cribbage.
Personal Life and Theatrical Foundations
Born in South Tidworth, Wiltshire, Allan was raised in Keighley, Yorkshire, and Wolverhampton before his family emigrated to Canada in 1955. After drama training at Rada from 1960 to 1963, he performed with repertory companies in Leicester and Nottingham, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in productions such as US and Doctor Faustus. His television credits included roles in Coronation Street, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Hold the Back Page. Allan married Susan Allan in 1963, and is survived by her, their two children, and five grandsons.
Eric Allan's contributions to British entertainment, spanning radio, television, and film, have left an indelible mark on audiences, celebrated through his memorable characters in iconic series like The Archers and Emmerdale.
