Demi Lovato Discusses Eating Disorder Recovery Journey

Demi Lovato made a striking appearance at a New York City event this week, where she openly discussed her ongoing recovery from a severe eating disorder. The 33-year-old singer and actress attended the screening of her new film Tow on Wednesday, looking stylish in a leather ensemble while sharing personal insights about her health journey.

Stylish Arrival at Film Premiere

The star arrived at the New York screening wearing a fashionable black leather jacket featuring distinctive red accent paneling across the torso and down the arms. She paired this with a pleated black leather midi skirt, creating a sophisticated yet edgy look. Lovato wore her dark hair down in a middle part, with makeup that highlighted her porcelain complexion through smoky eye shadow and shiny pink lip gloss.

Supportive Cast Presence

Lovato was joined at the event by several castmates from the film, including Rose Byrne, Dominic Sessa, and Simon Rex, along with director Stephanie Laing. In Tow, Lovato portrays a character named Nova in a story centered around Byrne's character Amanda Ogle, a homeless Seattle woman fighting to reclaim her life and car after receiving an exorbitant $21,634 tow bill. The film is scheduled for limited release in the United States beginning Friday, March 20.

Candid Recovery Discussion

Just one day before the screening, Lovato participated in a revealing conversation about her eating disorder recovery during a cookbook promotion event at the 92nd Street Y in New York. She appeared with Eli Rallo to discuss her upcoming publication One Plate At A Time: Recipes For Finding Freedom With Food, which is set for release on March 31.

The singer, who has battled bulimia for years, explained that her relationship with cooking began to transform approximately five years into her recovery journey, when she was around 30 years old. "I think this whole book is celebratory because it's a celebration of how far I've come," Lovato stated during the event.

Emotional Grocery Store Memories

Lovato shared poignant memories of her previous struggles with food, revealing that simple tasks like grocery shopping once caused significant emotional distress. "I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears because I was so overwhelmed by all of the food," she confessed. "And now I'm not only going into grocery stores and shopping myself, but I'm also cooking the meals that I'm making, and that's a huge win for me."

The star also discussed how she previously avoided celebratory foods, noting that "there was a time in my life where I wouldn't celebrate my birthdays with cakes, and so to have a birthday cake recipe in my cookbook is so meaningful and has been so rewarding."

Culinary Breakthrough Moments

Lovato described a particular dinner with friends that marked a turning point in her recovery journey. "We turned it into this spaghetti squash salad. That was the first recipe that I cooked with friends where I was like, 'Wow, this is actually really fun,'" she recalled. This experience helped her recognize the joy that cooking could bring into her life.

The former Disney Channel star emphasized that "when I actually stepped foot into the kitchen and had so much joy come from it, and I was proud of what I made" represented significant progress in her healing process.

Cookbook Creation Purpose

Lovato explained that her cookbook contains more than 80 recipes, including dishes like "Spag Bol," Chicken Milanese with arugula salad, and "Foolproof Pulled Pork." The collection is structured around her evolving relationship with food following years of struggling with bulimia.

"I wanted to create a cookbook that was for people who may have had disordered eating in the past or are just intimidated to step foot into the kitchen for the first time," Lovato remarked. "It's just about getting in the kitchen and getting comfortable around cooking, and that will set you up for success later down the road with more recipes."

In previous statements about the project, Lovato described how "this book is filled with simple, comforting recipes that have allowed me to reconnect with myself and find both freedom and joy in my kitchen – feelings I never thought I could experience." She added that the cooking process "has allowed me to see cooking as an act of love and kindness to myself and those in my life, and I hope this book can bring that same feeling into your home too."

Recent Health Transformation

This candid discussion about recovery comes amid reports that Lovato has lost approximately 50 pounds over the past year through dietary changes and an adjusted exercise routine. Her appearance at the film screening demonstrated both her physical transformation and her ongoing commitment to mental and emotional wellbeing through her recovery journey.
