The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, has assured Pope Leo of a "warm welcome" should he visit the United Kingdom, following a historic meeting at the Vatican on Monday.
Historic Vatican Summit
During their private encounter at the Apostolic Palace, Dame Sarah commended the pontiff for his vocal opposition to global injustices and his unwavering message of hope. She highlighted his recent pilgrimage to Africa, describing it as "full of life and joy," and thanked him for reminding the world that despite suffering, people strive for life in all its fullness.
The meeting comes as both religious leaders have consistently called for peace amid ongoing conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East. Pope Leo has urged for "weapons to fall silent" in Ukraine and commended a ceasefire in Lebanon.
King Charles and Pope's Historic Prayer
Dame Sarah also conveyed that King Charles had "valued his recent visit" with the Pope, particularly the shared prayer and spirit of fraternity. In October, the King and Pope Leo made history by praying together in a public service—the first time a British monarch, as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, had done so with the head of the Catholic Church since the Reformation.
Trump's Criticism
The Vatican summit follows recent criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who branded the Pope "weak on crime, and terrible for foreign policy." Trump demanded the pontiff "focus on being a great Pope, not a politician."
Warm Welcome Assured
Addressing the Pope, Dame Sarah said: "Please be assured of a warm welcome from the Church of England should you honour the United Kingdom with a visit." She praised him for speaking "powerfully about the many injustices in our world today" and for emphasizing hope over despair.
The Archbishop's four-day visit to Rome included a sermon at the church of St. Paul's Within the Walls, where she joined fellow clergy beneath the central mosaic depicting the Fathers of the Church.
