The Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, Hosam Naoum, has issued a stark warning over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling on Israel to immediately cease military operations and allow unrestricted aid access to the besieged territory.
Church Leader's Urgent Appeal
In an emotional statement, Bishop Naoum described the situation in Gaza as "dire beyond words," with civilians facing starvation, disease, and relentless bombardment. "The world cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost daily," he declared.
Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding
The bishop highlighted several critical concerns:
- Over 90% of Gaza's population now faces acute food insecurity
- Medical facilities have virtually collapsed without fuel and supplies
- Children make up nearly half of all casualties
Religious Sites Under Threat
Bishop Naoum expressed particular concern about damage to sacred sites, including the historic Church of Saint Porphyrius, one of the world's oldest continuously operating churches. "These are not just buildings - they represent centuries of religious coexistence now being erased," he stated.
International Response
The Anglican leader called on Western governments to apply greater pressure for a ceasefire, criticizing what he called "empty rhetoric without meaningful action." His appeal comes as UN agencies report that only a trickle of aid is reaching Gaza despite overwhelming needs.
Bishop Naoum concluded with a plea for compassion: "We must see the humanity in each other before it's too late. The children of Gaza deserve peace as much as any child anywhere."
