Sir Keir Starmer has warned that Britain's economic situation will not 'return to normal' even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The Labour leader stated that the UK must pursue a 'different course' for its future, rather than reverting to the 'status quo' as it did after previous economic shocks like the 2008 financial crash and the Covid pandemic.
Global impact of the blockade
Starmer highlighted that the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil flows, has significantly impacted economies worldwide due to the US-Israeli war with Iran. He is leading a coalition with President Macron to work towards reopening the waterway, but cautioned that global volatility, including the war in Ukraine, will persist.
A new direction for Britain
The Labour leader suggested that moving away from the status quo involves making Britain 'more resilient' through closer ties with Europe and a transition to green energy. He emphasised that the UK cannot simply return to pre-crisis conditions and must instead build a more sustainable and secure economic future.
