Alan Shearer has named his combined Liverpool and Manchester United XI ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash at Anfield, and only one United player makes the cut. The former England striker included Luke Shaw at left-back, bypassing competition from Liverpool's Andrew Robertson and Milos Kerkez. Shaw has started every league game for United this season.
Shearer's selection heavily favours Liverpool, with Alisson in goal, a defence featuring Conor Bradley, Virgil van Dijk, and Ibrahima Konate. In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai are chosen, leaving out United captain Bruno Fernandes. The attack consists of Mohamed Salah, summer signing Hugo Ekitike, and Cody Gakpo.
Notably absent from Shearer's XI are United's own summer arrivals Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, as well as Newcastle's Alexander Isak, who has been linked with both clubs. The combined team reflects Liverpool's strong form despite three consecutive defeats, while United have struggled under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer emphasised the magnitude of the fixture: 'Liverpool v Man United is always big because of the size of both clubs. Because of the situation and hype around both clubs, there's no doubt there is extra spice to this game.' He also noted the challenge of integrating international players returning from duty.
