Asda has updated its opening times for the upcoming bank holiday Monday, prompting shoppers to take note of when stores will close. There are two bank holidays in May, with the first occurring on Monday, May 4. In the run-up to this, Asda stores will operate as usual on Friday, May 1, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3.
However, on the bank holiday Monday, stores may close earlier than normal depending on location. The exact opening hours will vary, but a general guideline has been provided. The majority of large Asda supermarkets in England and Wales will open from 8am to 10pm, with no changes for smaller Asda Express convenience stores. In Scotland, there are no legal restrictions on trading hours for large shops on Sundays or bank holidays, meaning Asda stores in Scotland should remain open as usual on the bank holiday Monday.
Shoppers are advised to check local store opening times online before heading to their nearest branch to avoid disappointment, as times may differ slightly.
This announcement follows Asda's report of a slump in sales and earnings over the past year. In an update last month, the supermarket revealed that sales, excluding fuel, dropped by 3.3% to £21 billion in 2025 compared to the previous year. Adjusted earnings tumbled by a third to £764 million for the year.
Asda is currently undergoing a major turnaround under returning boss Allan Leighton, after losing market share to rivals such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Lidl. However, transformation efforts were set back by a botched £1 billion IT upgrade last year, which caused severe disruption, reduced product availability, and weaker sales.
In the latest update, Mr. Leighton, executive chairman of the business, stated that sales declined by 2.4% in the final quarter of last year due to the ongoing impact of the IT disruption. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that the business now has positive momentum and is returning to sales growth. He commented: "There is plenty to do but there is also plenty of upside. We have that momentum and a strong balance sheet to allow us to push forward."
Asda noted that product availability has recovered to an eight-year high of 95%, leading to stronger sales in recent months. Total like-for-like sales fell by 1.6% in January and 1% in February, but have grown by 1.2% so far in March.
