From Heartbreak to Healing: How Pole Dancing Restructured My Life

In a period of heartbreak, learning to pole dance provided much-needed structure and a renewed appreciation for the body. Bec Zhuang, at her pole dancing studio in Sydney, reflects on this transformative journey, stating, "Pole has deepened my appreciation for my body and forced me to be more attuned to it." Her experience highlights how an unexpected hobby can foster self-determination and personal growth.

A Rocky Start and a Renewed Chance

Initially, pole dancing was far from appealing. In 2023, after being encouraged by a friend, Zhuang attended a crowded, commercialised class. The metal pole caused skin friction and dizziness, leading to multiple breaks. As a former gymnast, her ego was bruised by the struggle. However, by 2025, following the end of a decade-long relationship, she sought new activities to rebuild confidence. Inspired by a burlesque show, she aimed for striptease classes but found a Sydney pole studio offering a trial instead. For just $15, she decided to give it another shot.

Finding Comfort and Community

The second class proved drastically different. With natural light and a welcoming instructor named Luci, the studio felt warm and homely. As the sole student, Zhuang learned fundamentals like walking around the pole, chair spins, and climbs, crafting a mini routine with enthusiastic support. This positive experience led her to sign up for a 10-week beginner course, making Sunday afternoons a sacred commitment during blurry days of heartbreak.

Progress and Perseverance

Nine months later, Zhuang attends two or three classes weekly and maintains a "polegress" Instagram to track advancements. She notes significant improvements: climbing pain-free, dancing in seven-inch heels, and extending pole endurance from seconds to over a minute. Skills like inverting and aerial moves are now part of her repertoire. However, the journey included setbacks, such as a mild scapula injury from overtraining, which required physiotherapy and scaled-back sessions.

Broader Impacts and Respect for the Sport

Ultimately, pole dancing has taught patience, both in mastering skills and navigating heartbreak. It serves as a reminder of self-determination, a hobby carved out independently. Zhuang has gained deep respect for the sport's rich history, diverse styles, and communal aspects, where cheering and encouragement are norms. Now, she enthusiastically recruits others, sharing the benefits of this empowering activity.
