JLS star Aston Merrygold has been admitted to hospital and is facing major surgery after suffering a significant injury. The singer, famed for his energetic backflips and dance routines, has been performing seated during the band's ongoing UK tour, relying on crutches to get around.
The Injury and Hospital Admission
Aston Merrygold shared the news with fans via social media last week, explaining the situation in a TikTok video with his wife, Sarah-Louise. He revealed the injury happened during rehearsals and requires an operation. "So, I had a bit of an accident on an injury and basically it requires surgery," he said, showing off his crutches and the large protective boot on his leg.
On Friday, the singer posted an update from hospital, sharing pictures of himself in a gown ahead of the procedure. He captioned the images "Here we go," accompanied by a knife emoji, a leg emoji, and what looked like an amputated leg emoji. His wife commented with a message of support, saying, "Love you so much."
Performing Through the Pain
Despite the serious injury, Aston insisted the show must go on for the band's comeback tour. He reportedly told fans at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow that his team advised postponing, but he said there was "no way" he would disappoint supporters. His bandmates, including Marvin Humes who sent his love, had to make significant changes to their stage show to accommodate his limited mobility.
On Instagram, Aston showcased a custom bedazzled denim jacket with the phrase "backflips on hold" written on it. He also shared sweet photos of his family – wife Sarah-Louise and their three children, Grayson Jax, seven, Macauley Shay, four, and Riley Skye, 19 months – all wearing JLS merchandise in support.
Family and Band Support
Sarah-Louise, who met Aston in 2012 while working as a JLS backing dancer, posted a heartfelt tribute calling her husband a "warrior." She acknowledged the physical and mental challenge of the last few weeks and promised full support during his recovery, which is now expected to be longer than first thought.
The Noughties boy band, consisting of Oritsé Williams, JB Gill, Aston Merrygold, and Marvin Humes, reunited for a limited run of UK shows in November after going their separate ways for 12 years. Aston's determination to perform has been a central theme of their comeback, even as he faces a significant period of rehabilitation ahead.
