Tomato soup has been dethroned after decades at the top of Britain’s tastebuds, with cream of chicken now officially the nation’s favourite, according to a new poll.
The survey, commissioned by Crosse and Blackwell, found that almost half of Britons (45 per cent) prefer cream of chicken, compared to 39 per cent who still stick with cream of tomato. Beef and vegetable came third (32 per cent), followed by roast chicken and vegetable (31 per cent) and winter vegetable (27 per cent).
The poll also revealed dining habits: 43 per cent of Brits had soup for dinner the previous night, with 27 per cent having it as a starter and 33 per cent as a main meal. A bowl is the preferred serving vessel for 91 per cent of respondents, though 18 per cent admit to drinking a cup-a-soup from a mug.
When it comes to accompaniments, 48 per cent demand bread and butter, while 37 per cent want a cheese toastie. Nearly one in ten even dunk sausage rolls, and 6 per cent swear by buttered crumpets.
A spokesperson for Crosse and Blackwell said: “With almost half of the popular vote – cream of chicken is our favourite soup ... Brits cherish the comfort and quality of a perfectly crafted bowl, especially when the weather gets cold.”
