A superfood available for less than 6p per serving from Aldi could help lower cholesterol and reduce high blood pressure, according to research. A 2015 study found that regular consumption of flaxseed over 12 months lowers cholesterol in healthy individuals with mild markers of cardiovascular disease.
The study also showed that flaxseed consumption reduces cholesterol in patients with peripheral artery disease. Canadian researchers noted that flaxseed has beneficial cardiovascular effects in animal studies, including improving vascular reactivity and reducing the risk of arterial plaque.
Flaxseed is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3s, which have natural anti-inflammatory properties. A 2023 study found that flaxseed supplementation significantly reduced blood pressure, suggesting it could be used alongside medication as an effective supplement.
Additionally, flaxseed may help reduce blood glucose in people with diabetes and offer protection against breast cancer. Its high fibre content can also reduce appetite and aid weight loss.
A 200g bag of milled flaxseed costs £1.69 at Aldi, working out at less than 6p per 7g tablespoon. Aldi suggests blending it into smoothies, mixing into porridge or cereal, or sprinkling on yoghurt.
