Woman with Medical Condition Claims Humiliation at Disneyland Over Clothing
A Scottish woman diagnosed with a medical condition that causes her breasts to keep growing has claimed she was left 'humiliated' during a visit to Disneyland in California last month. Summer Robert, 25, says staff at the theme park demanded she cover her cleavage or leave, an incident she attributes to discrimination over her macromastia.
Medical Background and Clothing Struggles
Summer Robert was diagnosed with macromastia, a type of breast hypertrophy that results in excessive breast growth over time. This condition has made it challenging for her to find clothing that fully covers her chest, a practical issue that she says led to the confrontation at Disneyland. On January 20, while visiting the park with a friend, she was wearing a low-cut, long-sleeved shirt tucked into a mini, pink pleated skirt with shorts underneath for modesty.
The Incident at the Park
According to Summer, a male employee initially approached her to inform her that someone had complained about her outfit. When she asked what was wrong, he shrugged and gave a non-committal response. She emphasized that her attire was similar to others at the park, with the only difference being her larger breasts due to her condition. However, the situation escalated when an older female staff member intervened.
'She began shouting at me, saying, "I'm a mother, an aunt, and a daughter, and I can tell you're dressed ridiculously. You need to go to your car and get a sweatshirt to cover them up,"' Summer recalled. Despite explaining she had no sweatshirt in the 30-degree heat, the employee insisted she buy one from the Disney store or leave the premises.
Escalation and Alleged Discrimination
Summer claims the female staff member followed her and her friend even after they exited the park, confronting them in a store outside. When Summer mentioned the word 'discrimination', the employee allegedly changed her story, now focusing on the length of her skirt instead of her cleavage. 'This was despite her repeatedly saying I needed to "cover those up", clearly referring to my chest,' Summer explained.
The confrontation continued, with the staff member reportedly yelling until Summer boarded a train and left the area. 'I felt humiliated and disgusting and cried the entire way home,' she said, noting that the incident occurred after four hours in the park where she had previously received positive treatment, such as a free FastPass.
Aftermath and Broader Implications
Summer was not banned from Disneyland and assumes she could return, but the experience has deterred her from ever going back. She contrasted this with her visits to Disney parks in Paris and Florida, where she never faced similar issues. The incident highlights ongoing challenges for individuals with medical conditions like macromastia, who may face stigma and discrimination in public spaces.
Disneyland representatives have been contacted for comment by Daily Mail, but no response has been reported at this time. Summer's story raises questions about theme park policies and staff training regarding inclusivity and medical conditions.
