NHS Nurse Allowed Back to Work After Controversial Suspension Over Patient Title

An NHS nurse who faced suspension after addressing a transgender paedophile patient as 'Mr' has been permitted to resume her duties today. Jennifer Melle, a 41-year-old single mother of two, was removed from her position at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, in May 2024 following an incident involving a male sex offender who objected to the masculine title.

Incident Details and Allegations

During the confrontation, Ms Melle endured screaming racist abuse and threats of violence from the patient, a 6ft individual with a beard who was chained to guards from a men's prison while receiving treatment for a urinary infection. The patient, known as Patient X, became agitated when Ms Melle used the term 'Mr' during catheter fitting procedures.

Subsequently, the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust accused Ms Melle of a potential patient data breach for discussing the incident, despite the patient's identity remaining undisclosed. This led to her suspension, disciplinary action, and eventual reinstatement after significant public backlash and protests, including support from the Darlington nurses who previously won a case against an NHS hospital regarding changing room policies.

Ongoing Legal Battles and Investigations

Ms Melle, a Christian nurse with 12 years of service prior to the incident, received a written warning in December 2024 following a disciplinary hearing. The Trust later suspended her for nine months in April 2025 while investigating claims she publicly disclosed details of the event. She is now pursuing an employment tribunal, alleging harassment, discrimination, and breaches of freedom of thought and religion.

Additionally, two Nursing and Midwifery Council fitness-to-practice investigations remain open concerning the 'misgendering' allegations. Notably, her union, the Royal College of Nursing, reportedly declined to support her case.

Public and Political Support

More than 18,000 people signed a petition advocating for Ms Melle's exoneration. Shadow equalities minister Claire Coutinho praised her as "one of the bravest women I have ever met," criticizing the NHS for being influenced by "radical gender ideology" that allegedly prioritizes other concerns over women's rights.

Other supporters include MPs Rebecca Paul, Jim Shannon, Mims Davies, and Rosie Duffield, along with NHS Fife nurse Sandie Peggie, who faced similar suspension issues. Following a private hearing, Ms Melle expressed relief and gratitude, acknowledging support from her faith and the public during what she described as a "long and painful journey."

The Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has been contacted for comment regarding the reinstatement and ongoing proceedings.
