Romania Manager Mircea Lucescu Hospitalised After Collapse in Training

Romania's national football team manager, Mircea Lucescu, was rushed to hospital after collapsing during a team meeting on Sunday. The 80-year-old coach, who would have been the oldest manager at the 2026 World Cup had Romania qualified, is now reported to be in a stable condition and will undergo further medical tests.

Incident During Team Preparation

Lucescu was overseeing a team meeting at Romania's training camp when he suddenly collapsed in front of his players. According to local reports, the veteran manager sat on a chair and 'switched off', prompting immediate concern. The team's medical staff provided initial assistance before two ambulances arrived at the scene to transport him to hospital.

The collapse occurred as Lucescu was preparing his squad for a friendly match against Slovakia scheduled for Tuesday. Both nations had recently seen their World Cup qualification hopes dashed on Thursday, with Romania suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Turkey in their play-off semi-final, while Slovakia lost 4-3 at home to Kosovo.

Manager's Health Update and Humour

Speaking to Romanian outlet GSP from hospital, Lucescu provided an update on his condition, stating: "I'm okay now. I will be submitted to further testing." The manager, who has been battling health issues in recent months, reportedly maintained his characteristic humour even during the emergency.

According to Turkish publication Fanatik, Lucescu joked with the ambulance doctors, telling them: "You were fast. You could be good strikers!" This light-hearted comment came despite the serious nature of the situation.

World Cup Qualification Heartbreak

The incident followed Romania's painful elimination from World Cup qualification just days earlier. A second-half goal from Brighton star Ferdi Kadioglu secured Turkey's 1-0 victory in Istanbul, ending Romania's hopes of reaching their first World Cup since 1998.

It has now been 28 years since Romania last appeared at a World Cup tournament, with their most recent participation coming at France '98 where they reached the last 16. Despite finishing only third in their qualifying group this campaign, Lucescu's side earned a play-off berth through their performance in the 2024-25 Nations League.

Lucescu's Illustrious Career

Mircea Lucescu brings a wealth of experience to his role, having captained Romania at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico before embarking on a managerial career spanning six decades. His nomadic coaching journey has included:

  • 14 different clubs and national teams
  • 12 years in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Stints with Inter Milan, Galatasaray, and Zenit St Petersburg
  • Management of the Turkish national team
  • Winning the UEFA Cup with Shakhtar in 2009

Now in his second spell as Romania manager, Lucescu had previously spoken about his commitment to the role despite health concerns. In an interview with the Guardian ahead of the Turkey match, he explained: "When the doctors told me I could go on coaching, I focused on what I had to do for Romania. I'm not in my best shape so I would have stepped away if there was another option available. But I insist: I can't leave like a coward."

The 80-year-old manager remains determined to continue his work with the national team, demonstrating the resilience that has characterised his remarkable career in football.
