Grandparents Could Secure £6,600 State Pension Boost This Half-Term

Grandparents who assist with childcare during the February half-term have a significant opportunity to enhance their state pension by as much as £6,600. This financial benefit is accessible through Specified Adult Childcare Credits, a type of National Insurance Credits designed to fill gaps in National Insurance records.

Eligibility and Requirements for Childcare Credits

To qualify for these credits, individuals must be under the state pension age, which is currently 66, at the time of providing care. The child being looked after must be under the age of 12, or under 17 if they have a disability. There is no minimum hourly requirement for childcare, meaning even occasional care, such as one day a week, can make you eligible.

Claims can be backdated to 2011, allowing grandparents who have previously cared for grandchildren to apply even if they are no longer providing care. The parent of the child must be entitled to Child Benefit, as they will transfer the National Insurance Credit typically associated with it to the grandparent. It is crucial for parents to ensure their own National Insurance record remains on track to avoid impacting their state pension forecast.

Financial Impact and Application Process

Research from Quilter indicates that each year of transferred credit is valued at £330 in additional state pension income for the 2025/26 period. Over a 20-year retirement, this could accumulate to nearly £6,600. Most individuals need 35 qualifying National Insurance years to claim the full new state pension, currently worth £230.25 per week, with a minimum of ten years required to receive any payment.

To apply, you must complete form CA9176 on GOV.UK, which requires signatures from both the grandparent and the parent transferring the credit. This process ensures proper documentation and verification of the childcare arrangement.

Broader Eligibility and Awareness Issues

It is not only grandparents who can benefit; aunts, uncles, or any regular caregivers may also qualify for Specified Adult Childcare Credits. However, awareness of this scheme remains low. Data from a Freedom of Information request by Quilter to HMRC shows that between October 2023 and September 2024, 42,964 applications were submitted, with 131,594 applications over the past five years and 104,433 approvals.

Jon Greer, head of retirement policy at Quilter, emphasized the need for increased awareness, stating, "Each year of credit is currently worth £330 on your state pension and yet awareness remains far too low. Many eligible grandparents could be missing out on thousands of pounds simply because they don’t realise they qualify or how to apply." He called for government efforts to promote these credits, particularly among lower-income families where gaps in National Insurance records are more common.

This initiative highlights a valuable opportunity for caregivers to secure their financial future while supporting their families, making it a crucial consideration during school holidays like the February half-term.
