EastEnders actress Simone Lahbib has opened up about the death of her brother, Stephen, urging the public to value every moment following his passing from terminal cancer in November 2024. Stephen died just six months after his diagnosis, with the soap star now sharing her family's experience to support Strathcarron Hospice in Denny, Scotland, as it marks its 45th anniversary.
A Tribute to a 'Sociable and Talented' Brother
Simone Lahbib paid a heartfelt tribute to her brother, describing him as 'sociable and very talented' and saying she misses him 'more than words'. She revealed that Stephen was a passionate singer, songwriter, and graphic designer, whose band 'Mama Mayhem' has music available on Spotify. The hospice itself noted that for Stephen, meaning in life came from connection with family and friends, music, and singing.
The 'Invaluable' Support of Hospice Care
Speaking as part of Strathcarron Hospice's 'What Makes Life Meaningful' campaign, Lahbib detailed the crucial support her family received. 'Strathcarron’s Hospice at Home team was invaluable toward the end,' she said. 'They were so lovely, understanding and supportive. It was a very difficult, distressing time and we came to rely on them.'
She admitted she had expected the hospice itself to feel more clinical, but her experience was profoundly different. 'The staff made not only Stephen, but his family and friends feel welcome and important,' Lahbib explained. 'Stephen was a very sociable man. I believe he made some good friends during his time there.'
A Lasting Legacy of Kindness and Music
The actress emphasised that the compassion extended beyond Stephen's death, offering continued support to the grieving family. 'Stephen was not only cared for at Strathcarron Hospice - he was loved. My family and I can't thank them all enough for all they did,' she stated.
Reflecting on her loss, Lahbib shared a renewed perspective on life. 'Since his death, I'm more aware of how precious and fragile life is,' she said. 'Stephen wanted to make every moment count and in his music he lives on. It will be treasured forever and played often.'
